With the growth of urban populations, Chinese cities are experiencing rapid construction and renewal. Datansha Island, once a low-income neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, is now undergoing revitalization through garden city initiatives focused on urban greening and active transport. Emphasizing the concept of transit-oriented development, Datansha Transit-Center aims to create a vibrant, livable community, fostering engagement and providing easy access to surrounding commercial areas, schools, and residential neighborhoods via green corridors and gardens.

This infrastructure renewal project addresses street space conflicts among public transport users, drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, all while achieving a safe and sustainable streetscape within a budget. Serving as the gateway to Datansha Island, the design incorporates local materials to create a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly environment. It has become a landmark of the area, featuring attractive walkways and a comfortable natural setting with native plants and other locally sourced materials.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, the pedestrian-first design proved effective in managing social distancing in high-density urban settings. Wider sidewalks, enclosed rest areas buffered by trees and shrubs, and designated waiting zones for public transit all helped reduce the spread of the virus, offering a safer, more resilient urban environment.
