West Lake Park, Chengdu
West Lake Park is a dynamic, open-air sports and waterfront park located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. The design thoughtfully integrates the urban context, surrounding neighborhoods, and everyday living patterns to create an all-weather, all-age leisure destination that is youthful, inclusive, and full of vitality.
Once a neglected lakeside area, the site was rediscovered for its clear water, rich wetland ecology, and abundance of native plant life. Guided by a deep understanding of local lifestyles and leisure preferences, the design adheres to principles of localization and micro-scale intervention. Original landscape elements with historical memory were preserved, while a series of themed waterfront zones—diverse in both scale and activity—were introduced to breathe new life into the space and promote a healthy, active lifestyle.
Public green spaces are not isolated entities but essential components of the city fabric. The design places people’s spatial experiences at its core, considering a range of potential activities and ensuring a harmonious balance between public use, operational efficiency, and sustainable management. Challenges such as seasonal planting transitions, construction timelines, equipment overuse, and long-term maintenance were addressed with pragmatic solutions. For example, a strategic planting approach preserved most on-site trees and reused local species, significantly reducing costs while enhancing ecological value.
A key priority throughout construction was to protect water quality and maintain the lake's ecological balance. A temporary water circulation system was established to isolate construction zones and minimize environmental impact.
Today, the park offers a vibrant and diverse atmosphere that fosters physical activity, social interaction, and environmental education. In the post-COVID era, people’s longing for accessible green space has only grown. West Lake Park meets this need, offering residents a nearby retreat where windows open to greenery, and daily walks become moments of connection with nature.
As a new urban landmark, the park is more than a recreational space—it is a living, breathing community hub that integrates sports, leisure, ecology, and culture into the rhythm of daily life.
