Huanglongxi Valley · Tahitian, Chengdu
Everyone carries a utopian sanctuary in their heart. For Tao Yuanming, it was the ethereal paradise of “fragrant meadows and falling petals,” where “field paths intertwine and poultry calls resonate.” In contrast, W. Somerset Maugham’s literary ideal found form in Tahiti—a spiritual refuge crystallized in the South Pacific.
Nestled within Chengdu's “Land of Abundance,” Huanglongxi Valley unfolds as a thousand-acre ecological tapestry, where nature’s artistry weaves together seven distinct landscapes. A constellation of thirty crystalline lakes is cradled by rolling grasslands, while at its heart, the Tahiti Cluster emerges—an organic island ecosystem framed by terraced slopes, mountain vistas, and mirror-like waters, evoking Maugham’s tropical muse.
Guided by a low-intervention design philosophy, the design team sculpted the terrain to transform a single slope into a network of interwoven valleys. The tripartite landscape—Upper Valley, Mid Valley, and Lower Valley—creates a multisensory journey: tracing murmuring streams, wandering through dappled woodlands, and ascending to panoramic peaks. This spatial narrative embodies the Taoist principle of “mountain-water dialogue through layered discovery.”
Blending Eastern landscape philosophy with contemporary ecological design, it sought to cultivate spaces for self-discovery and quiet reflection. Much like Gauguin and Maugham in Polynesia, it invites residents to rediscover the serenity of moonlit contemplation through nature’s embrace—where land and spirit find harmony in silent dialogue.
