Located in the heart of Shangqiu, Henan Province, this project sets a new benchmark for luxury living by seamlessly blending local character with historical and cultural depth. The landscape design integrates these elements with the natural environment, crafting a distinctive residential experience. Through a contemporary interpretation of academy aesthetics, the project delivers a lifestyle that fuses elegance, cultural richness, and a profound sense of place.
Inspired by Yingtian Academy
The design draws from the legacy of Yingtian Academy—one of the four great academies of ancient China and the only one established in a bustling urban center during the Northern Song Dynasty. This cultural influence is deeply embedded in the design. By extracting the essence of academy culture and reinterpreting it through modern architectural language, the project introduces a water courtyard layout that echoes the academy’s ceremonial spatial order. The result is a refined residential environment that reflects the scholarly lifestyle and infuses the modern home with intellectual elegance.
Main Entrance
The entrance is designed in the style of Song Dynasty architecture, featuring traditional eaves and a graphite gray pitched roof. This modern Chinese expression of ancient architectural forms emphasizes the cultural lineage of the academy while refined detailing ensures cohesion and harmony, establishing a graceful and dignified urban threshold.
Historic Pavilion
A key highlight of the project is a historic pavilion sourced from Jingdezhen, renowned for its porcelain heritage. Every wooden component—over 20,000 in total—was carefully disassembled, packed, and transported across provinces to Shangqiu. It was then painstakingly reassembled over nearly a month by seven master craftsmen, showcasing a deep commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship.
Integration of Nature and Culture
Unlike conventional residential landscapes, this project genuinely fuses natural artistry with cultural narrative. By weaving natural elements into a series of immersive scenes, it not only recalls the lifestyle of ancient academies but also envisions the sophisticated living environments of the future—awakening new possibilities for culturally rich, nature-integrated communities.
